Researcher: Urban students are performing better than people are told, must focus on what is working (commentary) | MLive.com

(Rothstein) Author of two recent books on education, Rothstein said teachers feel they are blamed for all the inequities in American society, “expected to rescue children from impoverished families and communities with no support from others in society.”

He said teachers feel abused by demands to change curriculum that has taken years to develop, do not believe in focusing on standardized tests, are embittered by people who they believe are bent on destroying public education and believe there is “a witch hunt to cleanse schools of incompetents.”

He wrote that politicians from both sides of the aisle, leading educators and philanthropists “repeat incessantly that public schools are failing, especially for disadvantaged children. Achievement gaps between disadvantaged and middle class students have narrowed little, so as the proportion of white children declines; this failure of our schools weakens our nation, rendering it unable to compete internationally.”
